Increase Font Size in Google Reader

Google Reader added an option to increase/decrease font size for all the posts: press = to magnify text and - to decrease its size. Unfortunately, Google Reader doesn't save your preference, so the next time you open it you'll see the original font size.

While most browsers include a zoom feature (Opera, IE7, Firefox 3) or an option to increase the font size, Google Reader applies the new font size only to the posts, not to the entire page.

There's also a new keyboard shortcut for sharing posts and adding notes: Shift+D. To see a list of all the shortcuts, press ? in Google Reader.

Oh, and one more thing: you can now delete notes, not just unshare them.

  1. Why not use Ctrl + Scroll down (increase font) and Ctrl + Scroll up (reduce font size). Unlike the new Google Reader feature, this shortcut changes font size for the post as well as the entire page :)

  2. Yeah, that "decrease font" key isn't working so well (Mac/FF). Fortunately, as you said, it doesn't remember preferences.

  3. This magnification feature is growing on me - I can see the unmagnified text just fine, but having it there adds emphasis to the highlight, making it easier to focus on that.

  4. doesnt work on FF3b5
Also since I dont like zoom all page, that is used on FF3, and the "Zoom Text Only" option sucks, I use NoSquint AddOn

  5. We pushed this in the same release as the "share anything" feature, but we figured we should wait for a couple of days before we announced it, so that the press from the other announcement would die down a bit. Here's the official blog post:

  6. Thank you! I was literally reading your post in my Google Reader and had been wondering how to increase only the post text size (I had been using cmd +/0 but that was annoying).

Cosmic! Again, thank you for your tip.

  16. Why should we have to do this.
Page was perfect as it was, now to read goodle mail, have to either:

Ctrl+ which increases both font and page to far too large a size,
    or:
View and select a different character encoding, and I also use you as my lead to Hotmail, that also now suffers from illegibility.

Silly question, is this because when I changed my os to Linux, you automatically gave me Google Mail Beta, which I had deliberately not loaded.

In the mean time, trying to manage with this dreadful layout, but not for much longer.

    Please help!!!!!

  19. The statement that many Universities will not survive in future and there will be much more serviced by on-line generic content may well be true. However, I believe that those that the value they create is NOT about learning content, it is about enhancing capabilities. Where content is used to create context in which to learn capabilities like analysis, thinking influence and building/leveraging social bonds, there is value for the student and their employers. I believe the future of Universities depends on what the universities offer and the quality (not the quantity) of the professionals they generate. By generating competent professionals who cherish the unpredictability of the world and who have the capabilities to figure out the best options to implement will generate on-going demand. However, if there is a focus on servicing students that need be spoon-fed or focus on summarising what happed instead of looking forward, then there will not be a demand -such skills are not what employers want and will not accelerate success for the students.

  20. I'm also using Ctrl + Scroll down or Scroll up to change fonts for the entire page. But this is a nice feature if you only want your post font size to change.

  21. I'm glad they give us the option to change the font size but it's such a hassle to have to do it every time you close it.
